Narrow Gauge

German narrow gauge in HO scale

Bemo

After a break of several years, Bemo are re-releasing their model of the Sachsen VIK 0-10-0T as one of the eight locos rebuilt by the DR from 1963, distinguished by the large welded water tanks, standard bunker, and modified connecting rod. The ‘Metal Collection’ model features a precision can motor, and will be offered both as a kit and ready-to-run in either DR Epoch III (as 99 653) or Epoch IV (as 099 1706-3) versions (above).

The Sachsen IVK Meyer, originally produced in rebuilt condition, is now available in earlier form, with rivetted water tanks and raised roof centre section ventilator. The kit version covers Epochs I to III, while assembled models are offered in Sachsen (above), DRG, and DR versions.

The standard DR rebuilt coaches are to be issued in the green & beige livery until recently used on the SOEG from Zittau to Oybin and Jonsdorf - two six-window and seven-window vehicles will be numbered 970-268, 970-472, 970-234, and 970-257 respectively. The SOEG are now reverting to traditional green, and two models will be made in this livery - six-window 970-518 (with baggage space) and seven-window 970-240.

The six-window coach will also be produced as now running on the Döllnitzbahn from Oschatz to Mügeln, in green & beige livery with the names and emblems of local towns: 970-263 ‘Oschatz’, 970-266 ‘Sornzig-Abla·’, 970-275 ‘Naundorf’, and 970-282 ‘Strehla’.

Weinert

New to the list is a complete kit for Nordhausen Wernigerode Eisenbahn 0-6-0T No.7, in original condition with long water tanks and vacuum brakes. This was one of a pair of locos built by Henschel in 1914 as samples for the military which came to the NWE in 1917. Under DR auspices they became 99 6101 and 6102, and Weinert plan to re-run their kit for these variants.

Looking ahead to 2008, the next project will be 0-4-0T 99 5602, either as in service on the Franzburger Kreisbahn Nord (below) or as preserved, as Franzburg, on the Bruchhausen-Vilsen museum line.

In each case, as usual, the main structure is whitemetal, with brass detailing parts, and a preassembled mechanism using cast nickel-silver wheels, with fine etched motion. The models are offered for HOe as well as the proper HOm, with a choice of Mabuchi or Faulhaber motor.

The Wismar ‘Frankfurt’ type bogie diesel railcars, both long and short variants, should finally be produced this year.

Roco

In HOe, the popular industrial 0-6-0T will appear in a new version as Deutsche Reichsbahn 99 4306 (an imaginary identity), and there will be a new set of two V-skips (all first quarter).

Egger-Bahn

It was a pleasure to see Roald Hofmann again and have the opportunity to inspect the latest Egger reincarnation, the small works diesel loco No.4, with red frames (above). No.9, with grey frames, is also offered; both come lightly weathered to bring out the detail. As with the previous models, the body has been recreated in brass, not plastic, and with much finer features - numbers added, not moulded, rain strips, separate handrails, top headlight, better wood grain effect, etc. Although only 43mm long over buffers, the model weighs 69 grammes. It too uses the completely re-engineered mechanism, with a Maxon motor driving through precision reduction gearing.

Schmalspurbedarf

Narrow gauge specialist Frank Tümmeler visited but has no new items in 2007, instead catching up with delayed projects from last year.

Schlosser

This maker produces high quality etched brass models with cast brass details, offered either as kits with full instructions or assembled.

New for this year are standard Prussian metre gauge coaches as used on the Feldabahn and the Eisfeld - Schönbrunn lines, a second/third composite (above) and a fourth (below).

Also in development are third class coaches ordered in the 1930s by the Nordhausen Wernigeröder Eisenbahn (NWE) in the Harz. The first batch had a single kingpost truss rod underframe and wide end platforms, while the second delivery featured rather smaller platforms and a twin queen-post frame. The finished models will be in DR form, with three numbers for each type.

In the 1950s the DR converted two of the first batch to second/baggage, and this variant will be also produced (below). The finished model can be obtained in all three Harz liveries - dark green, two-tone green, and red & cream.

All these vehicles have detailed etched interiors.

Austrian narrow gauge in HOe

Roco

The brand new model of the Austrian Mh class Engerth 0-8+4 (ÖBB 399) is nearly ready, and a sample was shown (above and below). It has a five-pole motor with flywheel, and a socket for a digital decoder. The first version represents Mh6 as presently preserved, and should be available in March.

A new digital start set in HOe has the Mariazeller 1099 C-C electric (which has not been available separately for some time) fitted with a decoder hauling three of the ÖBB bogie coaches in ‘jaffa’ livery, an oval of track with passing loop, and a multiMAUS controller with digital amplifier and transformer. (First quarter.)

With the aim of providing further suitable stock, there will be a set of three ÖBB bogie wagons, a van plus two flats loaded with logs. (First quarter.)

Liliput

Following the success of the Uh/498 0-6-2T, Liliput announced another brand new model for HOe in the form of the Orenstein & Koppel jackshaft drive 0-4-0 diesel D11 of the Zillertalbahn. This generic industrial machine is sure to be popular for other applications. It will have a five-pole motor with flywheel, decoder socket, and working directionally-controlled LED lighting. However, do not get too excited too soon - it is illustrated only with a prototype picture, and not due to be available until late 2008.

Meanwhile, there will be new versions of several of the familiar Austrian four-wheel coaches with appropriate roof styles in present-day liveries - the Waldviertelbahn’s ‘Litschau’, the SLB’s ‘Jausenstüberl’, and the buffet car from the Steyrtalbahn, all illustrated only by prototype pictures at this stage.

The four-wheel van gets two new running numbers, one ÖBB and one ZB, for Epoch III/IV, while the four-wheel open is backdated with DRG Epoch II markings as a type Ow ‘Linz’ (above).

The modern transporter wagon will be issued in the red livery of the SLB as presently in traffic on the Zillertalbahn.

WMK

This Austrian specialist offers assembled models of brass construction, with full underframe detail, and spoked wheels where appropriate.

SKGLB salon coach B/s 152 (above) is now available as an exclusive Fine-Scale model with complete interior fittings in Epoch I, III, and present museum condition. As an extension of the range, side corridor coach B/s 158 (below) will be produced this year.

The models of the Mixnitz - St.Erhard stock are to be issued with alternative markings, and the Ybbser railcar will be delivered in the LBMStE version.

Heris

Heris showed a hand-made sample of their proposed model of the Soviet Ty2 B-B 750mm gauge diesel (above); there was no mention of the appropriate corrugated side bogie coaches which were suggested last year.

Norwegian Rail Miniatures

The remaining stock of these HOe models has been acquired and is now being marketed by NMJ. They were made by Ajin in Korea, and represent the German-built 2-6-2T machines supplied to the 750mm Urskog - Hølandsbanen (as featured in CM January 2007).

Models of all locos (No.4 Setskogen, No.5 Bjørkelangen, No.6 Høland, and No.7 Prydz) were produced, but not all versions are still available.

Swiss metre gauge in HOm

Bemo
Rhätische Bahn

In 1927, for off-peak traffic, the Furka Oberalp obtained two petrol-engined four-wheel railcars, classified BChm2/2. No.21 was subsequently donated to the transport museum in Lucerne, and later loaned to the Dampfbahn Furka Bergstrecke. No.22 was sold to the RhB in 1947, becoming their BFm2/2 150. It was used mainly in the Prättigau and taken out of service in 1959. As their limited edition Model of the Year 2007 in the Exclusive Metal Collection, Bemo offer the railcar in this final form (above). Orders must be received before the end of April. The model has working lights, a decoder socket, and a five-pole motor with flywheel; it will be for HOm only, not convertible to HOe.

The model of G4/5 2-8-0 No.108 will be produced bearing the name Engiadina, as bestowed during the festival at Untervaz in October 2006.

The Ge6/6II will be issued in a new version as No.707 Scuol, with the single arm pantographs as fitted to all seven of the class from 1998. The current version of the model, as No.706 Disentis, will only be available while stocks last.

The Ge4/4III is appear in two new advertising liveries as No.641 Maienfeldwith the latest ‘Co-op’ colour scheme, with fresh fruit and vegetable graphics, as on their refrigerated containers, and as No.648 Susch in the new ‘Swisscom’ style.

A large gap in the range of passenger stock will be filled with new models of the EW II coaches, which were introduced between 1975 and 1980 and still make up a high proportion of the active fleet. First, composite, and second class vehicles are all planned, both in green and red liveries (above). The composite will also be made in the Arosa flowery blue colour scheme.

To allow accurate representation of the new Glacier Expressthe restaurant car is now in production (above) and two more coaches are noted, another Bp second (below) and the Api first with disabled accessible toilet.

An interior lighting kit for these coaches should also become available.

The Uce cement silo will be offered in a set of four (with different numbers) in the present finish with the red bands.

There will be a new version of the K1 vans representing the batch built between 1911 and 1913 in 1970s condition, still with wooden bodies, brown livery, and RhB lettering. Two running numbers (Gbk-v 5504 and 5560) are planned.

One of the ten vans converted for baggage use in passenger trains and reclassified D2 is to be produced fitted with the Jörger model track cleaning system.

The type Haik-v bogie sliding sidewall van will get the latest ‘Calanda Bräu’ advertising graphics, and there will be a new version of the Sp-w bogie flat with removable end bulkheads and side stakes.

Finally, there will be a four-wheel lowside Xk 9340 in maintenance department blue livery, a vehicle converted from a type Gb van.

Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn formerly Brig Visp Zermatt / Furka Oberalp

Stock to form a push-pull train will be available with the new name and logo - Deh4/4 96 Münster, two differently numbered second class coaches, and the ABt driving trailer, in its present form with rectangular headlights. Baggage van D 4342 will be similarly finished, and former FO electric shunting tractor Te2/2 4926 will also get the contemporary MGB paint scheme.

The centre entrance second class coaches with the so-called ‘sport wagen’ graphics will be in production shortly (above).

SBB Brünig

There will be a new version of the HGe4/4II rack loco with the improved mechanism featuring a five-pole motor in the classic SBB Brünig red paint scheme as HGe4/4 101 965 Lungern.

To augment the Golden Passtrain, second B 325 joins the range, replacing B 324 which has sold out.

Between 1945 and 1945, twenty-seven centre entrance bogie coaches of three different classes (first, composite, and second) were placed in service; this type I was followed in 1953/4 by fourteen further but slightly modified composites and seconds, type II. To accompany the type III coaches released last year and the Deh4/6 railcar with luggage compartment, Bemo list a first, a composite, and two seconds in the original green livery.

Luzern Stans Engelberg

LSE railcar with luggage compartment Deh4/6 122, a former Brünigbahn unit dating from 1941/2, will be modelled as repainted in early 1991 but before being rebuilt in 1994 when the rack drive was removed and additional tail lights added.

In December 1997 the LSE purchased seven centre entrance coaches from the Brünig, four of type I which were only kept as a reserve and were withdrawn in 2004 and three of type II which were still in traffic at the time of the merger to form the Zentralbahn in 2005. Bemo propose a composite and two seconds (below).

Montreux Oberland Bahn

As their Model of the Year for 2006, Bemo have produced the FZe6/6 articulated locos with luggage compartment as part of their Exclusive Metal Collection. These machines were ordered to haul the Golden Mountain Pullman Expressand subsequently used to pull heavy expresses, freights, or even special trains with the Pullman cars that remained with MOB. The handcrafted models are a limited edition with a five-pole flywheel-fitted motor, digital interface, and working headlights. They are not convertible to HOe. The project is running late, but a sample was shown (above).

Between 1944 and 1946 the MOB acquired six powerful BDe4/4 railcars capable of multiple unit operation and hauling substantial express trains. In 1974 and 1981 two were modified to working with driving trailers for local services, but the other four continued to handle the famous Panoramic Express and Superpanoramic Express trains. The new model is proposed in two running numbers, 3003 and 3004.

Both As first and Bs second class versions of the original MOB panoramic coaches, introduced from 1976, will be offered each with a choice of two running numbers.

There will be a new version of the GDe4/4 universal loco as No.2002, in the livery applied in May 2005 with the name Isabelle von Siebenthal; the unit has since been used mainly on the Golden Pass Classicexpress hauling new Pullman coaches.

D+R

The Rhätische Bahn bogie Post van has been backdated from the modern to the original door configuration and livery and is offered with a choice of two running numbers (above).

The EW IV standard first and second class coaches in the short form used on the Bernina line are newly available with interior lighting factory fitted, and different running numbers; the longer variants used on the main network are in preparation, and a body shell moulding was shown (above).

The Bernina EW IV coaches (first, second, and second/baggage) in the post-2004 all red livery are also planned (below).

The type DZ bogie baggage van will be offered with a third running number.

New versions of the panoramic coach are being developed, with two running numbers for the Brünig and a further one for the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, which will be available with interior lighting and figures fitted. It will also allow a set four differently numbered MGB panoramic coaches to be offered.

Looking ahead, D+R propose the RhB four-wheel baggage railmotor both as Fe 51 in brown and as De 151 in current service stock orange - this interesting historic vehicle is now usually to be found around Ospizio Bernina.

As a scenic accessory, a stack of lightly weathered RhB wooden sleepers is in preparation.

Jago

There was no mention of the previously planned range of Rhätische Bahn HOm models, the Uace bogie tank (cement silo) wagon, the type Kkl (originally S) four-wheel lowside, and the type Gk (originally K) four-wheel van.

Lematec

Lematec are now listing MOB railcar BDe4/4 5000 and driving trailer ABt 5300 for the second quarter of 2008.

Nm (using 6.5mm track)

Schlosser are now able to supply the Harz bogie coaches announced last year (above). They are offered either as kits or assembled.

New to their list are Harz four-wheel buffer wagons for transporter workings, one with brake platform, one with brake house. They will have a scale coupling at one end and a Micro-Trains® working knuckle the other. They are compatible with the transporter bogies offered by N-Tram (of Pfarrer-Behr-Weg 12, D-88402 Seehshaupt) and will be available singly or in pairs, kit or assembled.

TTm (using 9m track)

Schlosser have in preparation etched brass kits for some Harz modernised stock - single kingpost and twin queenpost truss rod underframe six window bogie coaches, and a matching half baggage van, plus a four-wheel open with raised brake seat and a four-wheel van.

Karsei offer a Köf II regauged from standard to metre, as a BR199, as used on the Halle industrial network and later in the Harz.

O scale

Fleischmann

The only new items in the O scale 16.5mm gauge ‘Magic Train’ range are new version of the four-wheel van and tank wagon (above) as fire-fighting vehicles in red livery with DR markings (April/May).

Schlosser

The narrow gauge brass kit specialist has a new offering for O scale, again in conjunction with Dera-Modellbahn (Goethestraße 6, D-99991 Großengottern): another vehicle from the Trusebahn, bogie van No.10 in DR form as KD4 974-901. They already produce this in HOe but the larger model will be re-engi-neered and not just have the etchings scaled up.

WMK

The ÖBB standard profile coaches with half and full windows, and a new edition of the Diho baggage van in brass, are now available.

The SKGLB range will be extended with Salonwagon B/s 152 and corridor coach B/s 158, plus new versions of various wagons.

All models are of highly detailed brass construction, with full underframe detail, and spoked wheels where appropriate.

Lematec

The modern 50 series ABe4/4 railcars used by the Rhätische Bahn on the Bernina line announced three years should now be delivered in the fourth quarter of this year. Three versions are listed: No.53 Tirano, No.54 Hakone, and No.56 Corviglia.

The proposal to model the Bernina Bahn ‘baby Crocodile’ in four versions (as BB No.82 in original condition, with large snowploughs; as RhB No.82, with small snowploughs and pantographs; likewise as renumbered to 182; and in that guise but with a modern single-arm collector) has been put back again, to the fourth quarter of next year.

Added to the advance programme, for 2008/9, is MOB railcar CFZe4/4.

Alpin Line

This range of metre gauge models, which has been through several owners, has plans to re-release soon the RhB Ge4/4II and the Uce cement silo, and samples were shown. New developments include the Gmf4/4 bogie diesel No.243 (also shown) and the RhB Ge6/6 ‘Crocodile’.

Bachmann

In the On30 range, the much-anticipated Sandy River 2-4-4T Forneys have recently been released, in both inside and outside frame versions, with markings or painted unlettered, and they are also offered factory fitted with DCC sound (above).

Redfern Models

This Australian enterprise is working on an ambitious range of narrow gauge models with proposals for among other things, various Garratt locomotives they have already produced a limited edition On30 model of the Victorian Railways G42. New items in development include American box cars (above) and flat cars (below) which would seem to be ideal for use with the new Bachmann Forney.
